This boldy dramatic poster advertises the performance of Alban Berg's opera Lulu at the 1974 Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto, Italy. The production was directed by Roman Polanski, with the music conducted by Christopher Keene. The partially masked face - mostly in white, with red around one eye and with a purple head covering - is set against a black background. With this bizarre, yet compelling image staring out from the poster, the viewer can't help but wonder what intriguing story the opera must tell.
German-American artist Richard Lindner (1901- 1978) designed this poster. After an early career as a book and magazine illustrator, he turned to painting and often painted images of harlequin figures with surrealist and cubist elements.
This poster makes a wonderful addition to a collection of theater and festival poster.
