This hand-signed lithograph by artist Richard Lindner advertises an Exhibition and Sale of his works at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine.
Lindner (1901-1978) was born in Germany but emigrated to the US at the start of WWII. After a career as a book and magazine illustrator, he turned to painting and often painted images of figures with surrealist and cubist elements. He became known for his erotic drawings inspired by the garishness of New York street life. His works reflect some aspects of Pop art, but he did not associate himself with the Pop art movement.
The drawing of the female in this 1967 work shows her in clothing often worn by teenage girls in the late 1960s – "short shorts" with high boots. Her top looks a bit like a traditional middy blouse, with a sailor-style collar that is part of a school uniform. But this is no girl; the figure is that of a sexy woman, with prominent breasts provocatively shown. Her garish make-up suggests that she is probably a prostitute. This depiction of female sexuality is seen frequently in Lindner's art.
The decorative scrawl giving the exhibit information adds an element of casual whimsy to this interesting and provocative poster.
