In 1981 renowned British artist David Hockney designed the sets and costumes for three 20th century French works (one ballet and two operas) performed at New York Metropolitan Opera House. Parade was the name of the ballet, and Hockney also designed this poster for the ballet. Picasso had done the set designs and costumes when this ballet was first performed in 1917, and Hockney drew from Picasso’s work, including the tumblers and harlequins who populated Picasso’s work. In the ballet, the harlequin is a highly skilled acrobat, and this is how Hockney portrays him in this poster. The primary colors and simple geometric shapes in this poster reflect Hockey's designs and give it a pop art feel.
David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most influential and accomplished British contemporary artist in printmaking, photography, stage design, and painting. His work is in collections of many of the world most prestigious museums, art centers, and private collectors.
