This poster by David Hockney for the 1997 Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston is luminous. At its center is a large circular shape resembling a boat sailing the ocean on a day with blue skies and white clouds. The outer rings (blue on the top, green on the bottom) are darker toned at the edges, and as each ring moves toward the center, the color becomes a lighter shade than the previous outer ring to direct your eye to the brightly lit center.
In making this poster, Hockney recreated the Orfeo ed Euridice backdrop which he designed for the 1994 televised broadcast of Placido Domingo’s Operalia.
David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most influential and accomplished British contemporary artist in printmaking, photography, stage design, and painting. His work is in collections of many of the world most prestigious museums, art centers, and private collectors.
If you love blues and greens in your home, you'll love having this luminous poster on your wall.
