This wonderful vintage lithograph advertises Op Signorken, an elixir made by A. Breckpot-Crabeels in Mechelen, Belgium. As the Dutch words on the side of the poster tell us, it’s healthy (gezond) and pleasant (aangenaam).
In the middle of the poster is a funny little man in a double-breasted military-style jacket with breeches and stockings, a clownish hat and a painted face. He is raising a glass of the elixir in his right hand in an apparent toast while sitting astride a cask on which is written the Dutch phrase “Proeft Dat Eens/ Hoe Lekker” meaning “Taste it once/ how good it is.”
The printer’s name, Van Kerkhoven of Brussels appears at the bottom. The poster’s colors of red, yellow and black echo the colors of the Belgian flag, as well as those of the city of Mechelen.
Although Belgium is famous for its hundreds of varieties of superb beer, it is also known for its excellent and sometimes unusual liqueurs, as this delightful poster reminds us. It will add a touch of fun and a spot of bright color wherever it is hung.
