In this exquisite art deco lithograph circa 1928 - 1935 a lovely young blonde woman is draped over a bottle labeled Persan Export. Her eyes are slightly closed in a dreamy expression of what could be called desire. Her fingers are long and graceful, her nails are polished, and her left ring finger is adorned with a large diamond. In short, she is totally captivating.
Persan is a red French wine grape variety which, when when distilled with anis (in English, anise), becomes the aperitif marketed in this poster. The words on the bottle identify it as Anis de France and also as L’anis Persan.
This very striking poster is large - about 5 feet high - with a black/dark blue background. The bottle itself, with its golden liquid, is about 4 feet tall and dominates the left half of the poster, but of course the viewer’s eye is drawn to the woman fondling it.
This stand-alone poster is actually sheet one of a larger work of two sheets, with the combined length (height) of the two sheets equaling about 10 ½ feet. This poster is the upper sheet. The bottom sheet repeats the product’s name, Persan Export, and identifies it as an Aperitif anis sec (a dry anise aperitif). It also adds the name of the purveyor: F. Lautier in Marseille.
French artist Obrad Nicolitch (1898-1976) designed this poster. His last name is printed in wonderfully distinctive art deco letters on the upper right portion of the poster.
This large, magnificent poster will dominate every area where it is placed, whether in a business or home. If you enjoy collecting vintage aperitif and liqueur posters and need a poster around which to build your collection, look no further.
