This original offset lithograph designed by Raymond Savignac (known as just "Savignac") is an advertisement for a throat lozenge (Solutricine Pastille). This poor gentleman has a sore throat ("gorge irritee"); it's so sore that his tie feels like a noose squeezing the bottom of his throat, and his throat is so enlarged and painful that it feels like it extends from his shoulders all the way to the top of his head. He definitely needs a throat lozenge to relieve his discomfort, and Solutricine Pastilles (an analgesic lozenge that soothed sore throat pain) will do the job.
Everyone has had a sore throat like this at some time or another, and all who see this poster can recognize themselves and how they felt and chuckle while being reminded to stock up on Solutricine Pastilles. The primary colors, flat figure and humor are all techniques used by Savignac in his advertisements.
Savignac (1907 - 2002) was born in Paris and lived in France his entire life. Regarded as one of the great poster artists of the modern era, he was artistically self-taught. After starting his career working under the artist Cassandre, Savignac went on to develop a unique style all his own. His flat figures and lighthearted, sometimes silly images were both charming and fresh, a perfect combination as advertising evolved to appeal to the masses. Critical of ads that lacked humor, he often made gentle fun of the products he was being paid to promote.
This is a poster you will love owning.
