This sweet poster by the famed French poster maker Raymond Savagnic (known simply as “Savignac”) celebrates the summer festival (Fete) traditionally held at the Tuileries Gardens (Jardin) in Paris from late April through late August. With rides, games and other entertainment, the festival offers something for adults and children and for tourists and Parisiennes alike.
Savignac’s signature light-heartedness and preference for design simplicity are on display in this poster, as two love birds in the colors of the French flag share a morsel, or maybe a tender moment, in complete harmony. Beside them is a bouquet of flowers. The delightful message here is: come to this celebration of summertime and have fun strolling through the lovely gardens and enjoying all the special activities. The French words at the bottom of the poster, QUALITE DE LA VIE, pretty much translate themselves and remind us what the French people feel that their summer festival is all about.
Savignac (1907 - 2002) was born in Paris and lived in France his entire life. Regarded as one of the great poster artists of the modern era, he was artistically self-taught. After starting his career working under the artist Cassandre, Savignac went on to develop a unique style all his own. His flat figures and lighthearted, sometimes silly images were both charming and fresh, a perfect combination as advertising evolved to appeal to the masses. Critical of ads that lacked humor, he often made gentle fun of the products he was being paid to promote.
This is a poster you will love owning.
