It's no surprise that this German poster advertising Mekka brand tobacco sold by the tobacco company Cruwell has become a favorite of vintage poster collectors. Visually stunning, it depicts a man dressed in Middle Eastern clothing who, to a German viewing this poster in the 1930s, no doubt appeared mysterious yet intriguing.
He is smoking an exotic-looking pipe with a long stem and chain. In his left hand he is demonstrating that his pipe tobacco comes in long, narrow ribbons, the best cut for pipe tobacco. And, as the bottom of the poster states, this fine-cut (feinschnitt) tobacco is made from a blend of the best varieties of pipe tobacco - Orient and Virginy.
With a smile that reaches all the way from his white teeth to the warm expression in his eyes, he has the air of an experienced pipe smoker who knows what he is talking about and whose advice (smoke Mekka brand pipe tobacco) can be trusted.
The small print in German at the bottom of the poster states that Cruwell Brothers, a specialty factory for smoking tobacco, was founded in 1705 in Bielefeld, Germany. Beside this printed statement is an oval medallion with a drawing of Cruwell Haus in Bielefeld where the tobacco factory was located for many years.
