The 1963 British film The Mouse On the Moon was screened in France as La Souris Sur la Lune. Directed by Richard Lester, it starred Margaret Rutherford and Ron Moody. It was the sequel to the 1959 film The Mouse That Roared which starred Peter Sellers. Both movies were based on books by Irish author Leonard Wibberley.
The plot of this satirical comedy centers around a tiny mythical country, The Grand Duchy of Fenwick, which persuades the US and the USSR to help fund its fledgling space program, when in fact it does not have a space program but instead just needs money to fix its plumbing.
The high-stakes space race between the US and the USSR that was underway in 1963 when this movie was made, six years before the US landed on the moon, provides an interesting historical context for this movie.
