This fascinating lithograph of a figure skater performing an intricate spin was created by famed artist David Hockney for the 1984 Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo.
In the 1980s, Hockney experimented with a photographic technique in which he combined separately taken photographic images of a single scene and overlapped them. These collages of photos (which he called “joiners”) arranged in a grid formation fragmented the objects in the photos and gave them the illusion of dynamic motion. This photocollage of a twirling ice skater is a wonderful illustration of his technique.
David Hockney (b. 1937) is one of the most influential, versatile and accomplished British contemporary artists in printmaking, photography, stage design, and painting. His work is in collections of many prestigious museums, art centers, and private collectors.
