New York artist Dave Pollot created this stunning and provocative hand-embellished print on canvas. Painting over portions of a still life on canvas, he added his personal, sardonic touches to to an earlier work by another artist.
Pollot explains his art this way:
My creative process begins inside thrift shops where I find abandoned and forgotten artwork. I use oil paints to alter these pieces and blend my additions – often elements of pop culture – transforming them into new works with new meaning.
He adds:
My work is the confluence of time periods, zeitgeists, styles, and intentions. By integrating distinct elements of pop culture from one generation into the abandoned artwork of another, cultural property lines are blurred and forgotten art is reinvented and transported into a more communal world where things like ‘modern nostalgia’ and ‘classical pop art’ make sense; one in which viewers are allowed an escape, if only for the few moments they spend looking at some bit of pop culture mischievously inserted into something that might have hung in their grandparents’ house.
This aptly describes the genesis of the process he used in creating this artwork. The very unique melding of a classic still life painting featuring fruits and vegetables with images of junk food from today’s grocery shelves creates not only a jarring juxtaposition but also a thoughtful commentary. The title of this artwork, Calorie Composition II, is itself an interesting observation on contemporary eating habits.
Pollot began his life’s work after meeting an “avid thrifter” who would later become his wife. His artwork has been displayed in homes, businesses, galleries, and private collections throughout the world.
