This offset lithograph on paper by graffiti artist Banksy was the event poster for a show titled “Vandalism as Modern Art” held in Los Angeles in 2018 at the Beyond the Streets exhibition space. The artwork shown on the poster is from a mural which Banksy had created in London the year before outside a retrospective exhibition of Jean Michel Basquiat’s work.
One of Basquiat’s paintings on display at that London exhibition was titled “Boy and Dog in a Johnnypump,” and it showed a robot (the boy) and a dog at a fire hydrant (the johnnypump). As a tribute to Basquiat, Banksy took Basquiat’s “boy” (the robot) and created a mural of him being frisked and interrogated by the police. This London mural by Banksy then became the artwork for this Los Angeles Vandalism as Modern Art exhibition poster.
Banksy (b. circa 1974) is a British street artist and activist who chooses to remain anonymous. His prolific street art and graffiti are works of political and social commentary that appear on streets, bridges, and walls in cities throughout the world. Armed with stencils and spray paint as his weapons, he pursues his personal agenda as social observer and activist growing out of Bristol's underground scene.
Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American painter and graffiti artist who took New York City by storm in the 1980s.
This poster will add interest to and inspire conversation in every room in your house, no matter where you put it.
