American graphic designer Ivan Chermayeff designed this poster for the 1979 Spoleto Festival’s American premiere of the comic opera The Desperate Husband by Domenico Cimarosa.
Presumably this is a portrait of the eponymous husband, with his blue-eyed stare and his white teeth bared. His bold profile, with the pinkish flesh tones of his face set off against his dark, hairy mustache, eyebrows, beard and head, gives the illusion of having been roughly cut from paper. Overall, the effect is quite dramatic.
During his long and distinguished career, American graphic designer Ivan Chermayeff (1932-2017) designed many corporate logos (including the NBC peacock and the Chase Bank logo), promotional posters and advertising campaigns.
Domenico Cimarosa (1749-1801) was an Italian composer who wrote more than eighty operas, most of which were comedies.
This poster will add some fun to your collection and no doubt draw speculation from viewers as to what a desperate husband in fact looks like (if not like this gentleman).
