This very fun and funny poster signed by artist Red Grooms was created for the 2005 Spoleto Festival in Charleston. Titled “Porch Party, Charleston,” it depicts a late-night party, under the magic of a full moon, on the porches of a house in Charleston. The inspiration for this poster was just such an event during the 1991 Spoleto Festival. Among the party-hardy crowd are musicians, puppeteers, socialites and, reportedly, the artist himself. The joie de vivre atmosphere generated by the festival, so palpable in this poster, draws in participants and spectators alike.
Nashville-born artist Charles (“Red”) Edward Grooms (b. 1937) is known for his cartoon-like portraits of the famous and the not-so-famous. This poster demonstrates his expertise doing portraits and caricatures, as he portrays the party-goers with humor and affection.
