This lovely poster for the 1965 Lucerne International Music Festival shows an abstract image of a stringed instrument with seven strings in different sizes and shapes. With just a portion of the instrument shown, the viewer is clearly invited to imagine what the rest of the instrument looks like (and sounds like).
Additional images which are not immediately apparent (at least not to everyone) are two faces in profile on either side of the instrument. Can you see them? If not, look more closely and you’ll see what is hidden in plain sight.
Hans Erni (1909-2015), who designed this poster, was a Swiss graphic designer, painter, illustrator, engraver and sculptor.
This elegant black and beige poster with its Italian words in red would make a great gift for any classical music lover and would also be an elegant addition to a room with a black/white decorating scheme. The “hidden” faces provide a fun conversation piece.
