The French phrase “joie de vivre” comes to mind when looking at this fun poster from the 1950s advertising Les Dauphins wine from the Dauphine region of southeast France. The dauphin (dolphin) on the coat of arms of early rulers of this region has become the dolphin in this poster, cavorting and doing tricks balancing a bottle of wine and a crown (a nod to his regal ancestors) on his snout. Highlighted in a red cubist-style box, he’s smiling, as is the passerby (a figure reminiscent of those in posters by French graphic designer Savignac) who is gazing up at him.
This poster, designed by Tilyjac, has wonderfully brilliant colors and a fun design which together give it an upbeat feeling. It invites passers-by to stop and look at it, as the pedestrian at the bottom has done. It will have this effect on you, too, when you add it to your poster collection. This poster would be perfect in any mid-century room!
