This poster provides a fascinating look back into US history. Published during World War I, it urges all to "Buy U.S. Gov't Bonds," which were loans by citizens to the US government for the war effort, later repaid by the government with interest.
Using a patriotic theme, the poster shows a scene of colonists celebrating outside Independence Hall in Philadelphia. In the upper left corner is a very large picture of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. At the top of the poster next to the bell it says, “Ring it Again,” and at the bottom it says, “Third Liberty Loan.”
The reference to “Ring it Again” -- i.e. ring the Liberty Bell again -– is a call to citizens to once again buy government war bonds, as this was the Third Liberty Loan Act. Bonds authorized by the original Liberty Loan Act and the Second Liberty Loan Act had already been sold and the monies spent. Washington was now going back to the people for an additional loan, euphemistically asking them to “Ring it again.”
