In 1988, artist Jeff Koons created a larger-than-life-sized gilded porcelain sculpture of Michael Jackson and his beloved pet chimpanzee Bubbles. A photograph of this sculpture became the art on this 2004 exhibition poster promoting Koons’ retrospective show at the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, Norway.
The photograph of this bizarre duo, dressed alike in white and gold braided military jackets (similar to the one immortalized by Beatle John Lennon in his 1966 photo shoot for Life Magazine) is as mesmerizing as the sculpture itself. It was likely chosen for the poster for this reason. It is definitely a jaw-dropping, stare-worthy image.
Jeff Koons (b. 1955) is a prominent and prolific American sculptor, illustrator and painter recognized for his work focusing on popular culture and depicting everyday objects. This sculpture is one of his most famous and controversial works.
Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Jeff Koons were/are giants in their respective art worlds. This poster brings this unlikely trio together; the discussions it sparks, wherever it is placed, will always be fascinating.
