This captivating Dutch poster from the 1920s-1930s shows the historic cheese market in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. Wheels of cheese are stacked on the ground, while the cheese porters carry cheese into the famous weigh house pictured in the background. In the foreground is one such worker eyeing the cheese before him. Dressed in white and wearing a red straw hat (the hat color signals which company he works for), he has straps slung over his shoulders, at the ready in case he needs to attach them to a barrow to move cheese.
As the oldest cheese market in The Netherlands, the Alkmaar Cheese Market still operates, though primarily as a tourist attraction.
