This lovely and nostalgic German travel poster from the 1960s is promoting train travel in the age of air travel. Its selling point is that on the train, the tourist is at “eye level” and can see beautiful scenery (such as green rolling hills with purple mountains in the distance) as well as local villages with their unique architectural points of interest. The rainbow colors of this romanticized village add to its appeal.
Commissioned by the German Federal Railway, Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB), this poster was designed by A. Peicher. Not much is known of this designer except that she was a “grafikerin” – a female graphic designer in what was then a male-dominated profession.
If you have traveled through Europe on a train, this poster will bring back lovely memories.
