This bold, visually compelling poster from the GDR (East Germany) is an advertisement for the movie Der Letzte Kaiser, which in English is The Last Emperor. This US blockbuster movie tells the story of the final emperor of China. Directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, it won nine Oscars (“Neun Oscars” as the poster states) and was translated into German and shown in East Germany in 1987.
The poster’s black background with the big black X across the picture of the Emperor in the middle tells the whole story; nothing else needed to be done to make the poster more visually compelling.
The poster designer was Erhard Gruttner (b. 1938) who worked in poster design, book design and television design throughout his long career. His works won many design awards and appeared in exhibits in museums and galleries throughout the world.
This poster would be a wonderful addition to a vintage film collection. Not only is it visually stunning, the movie won an Oscar for best picture, and this poster from 1987 was one of the last made in East Germany.
