The Underwood Typewriter Company, a manufacturer of typewriters headquartered in New York City, produced what is considered the first widely successful, modern typewriter.
The Underwood Model 5, shown in this wonderful print, was introduced in 1899 and was the typewriter of choice for businesses for the next thirty years. It became the modern standard of how a typewriter worked and what it looked like, and its phenomenal popularity enabled Underwood to dominate the typewriter market during that time.
This print by American artist Ross Wetzel (1917-1923) shows in detail the workings of this machine that transformed the lives of millions. Hang it on the wall of your office and, when in the mood to contemplate the technological changes that have transformed our world, give it a good look.
