PAULIUS AUGIUS POSTER

This poster announces a 1982 exhibition of the works of Lithuanian artist Paulius Augius at the Galerija (“Gallery” in Lithuanian) Chicago.  The artwork is from a 1938 woodcut by Augius titled Stations of the Cross in Samogitia (a region in Lithuania).  It shows a procession of women wearing headscarves and holding books, perhaps hymnals, as they pass huts with crosses on their thatched roofs. The intricate, heavy lines of the black-white village landscape create a somber folk-art feeling to this religious ritual.

Paulius Augius (1909-1960) was born in Lithuania but lived in Chicago following WWII. He was a painter, graphic artist and illustrator.
