This striking party plate was designed by Pop Art icon Roy Lichtenstein for the New York City store On First. Located on First Avenue, the store was the brainchild of fashion and advertising photographer Bert Stern who opened it with the idea that it would sell objects for the home designed by artists.
This plate is stamped on the back: "Roy Lichtenstein (c) On 1st Inc." It is signed in pen by Roy Lichtenstein.
Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American artist who, during the 1960s, became a leading figure in the Pop Art movement along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist and others. Inspired by comic strips, Lichtenstein often infused his art with parody. While Lichtenstein was best known as a leader of the Pop Art movement, he experimented with multiple art movements, including Art Deco, Futurism, Cubism, and Surrealism.
