This luminous offset lithograph announces an exhibition titled Das druckgrafische Werk (translated from German, this means The Graphic Work) of Herbert Bayer, noted graphic designer, painter, photographer and sculptor. The exhibition was shown at the Zurich Museum of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) beginning in December 1975 and continuing in January 1976.
Small print on the side of the poster states that Elso Schiavo did the poster design and execution (Entwurf und Ausfuhrung) and that J.C. Muller AC did the print (Druck).
Bayer (1900-1985), described as an “artistic polymath,” was one of the most influential proponents of the Bauhaus, the revolutionary German art and design school in Weimar that sought to integrate art and design into daily life. During his formative years at the Bauhaus, Bayer contributed to developing the modern discipline of graphic design, using photography, type, and geometric designs to promote products. He studied under Wassily Kandinsky and was greatly influenced by Kandinsky’s view that the arts should serve society. He was born in Austria but relocated to the United States in 1938.
This beautiful poster, even more impressive and engaging when viewed in person, shows rectangles with defined shapes in front of a circle with edges that fade into the poster background. The entire design, including the background, is done in shades of green, from dark to pale.
If you are admirer of Bauhaus design, you will love owning this poster. It will add a note of interest and style to a room with a contemporary design.
