RASMUSSEN NAESTVED DANISH POSTER

This lovely Art Deco travel poster from Denmark has this message:"Tag Toget Til Naestved." Translated into English, this simply says, "Take the train to Naestved." Naestved, a town located on the island of Zealand in Denmark, was a popular tourist destination in 1938 when this poster was published. 

What is interesting about this poster is that a train is nowhere to be seen, so if you don't read Danish, you don't know that this poster is promoting train travel. But this poster is all about the universal language of design, and its lovely stylized images of the tree in the foreground and the ship and the buildings (churches or perhaps castles or both) in the background draw you in and pique your interest in visiting Naestved regardless of how you plan to get there. (In fact you may end up booking passage on that ship, since Naestved is on an island.) This exquisite poster design is what is so compelling and captivating. 

Aage Rasmussen (1913-1975), the Danish graphic designer who created this poster, was one of the great poster artists in Denmark during the 20th century.  Inspired by the famous poster artist Cassandre, he used the design to convey his main idea, and this approach is clearly reflected in this poster. The words are simple and brief, and the lovely design does the selling. He is best known for the many advertising posters he created for Danish Railways.
