The bright green letters at the bottom of this fabulous poster read “NUXY,” and the label on the bottle above it says “Nuxy Aperitif Tonique,” so we know that this poster is an advertisement for a French liqueur.
But it's the design in the top half of the poster that is fascinating. It shows a large bird swooping down from above, with its white, grey and maroon feathers wrapping around the bottle. Its talons are holding and apparently squeezing a green walnut, as a dark liquid is flowing from the walnut into a funnel and then into the bottle. The Nuxy bottle label tells us that the aperitif is made from a base of green walnuts (noixvertes), and this poster provides a wildly fanciful and fun version of exactly how this "manufacturing" process works.
The use of bold colors and somewhat abstract shapes to depict the bird and its movements makes this poster unique among vintage liqueur posters which more typically portray smiling people (often women) enjoying a drink. Its wry visualization as to exactly how this aperitif is made also makes it unusual.
This distinctive poster would make a striking addition to every collection of vintage liqueur and aperitif posters. And, with its deep colors and somewhat abstract design, it would add a strong visual focus to a room with a primarily black and white decor.
